2017 MENTORING - CHRIS VISITS ST PETERS WESTERN

2017 Mentoring – Michael Bohl @ St Peters Western

Recently I was lucky enough to be invited up to attend a little over a week’s worth of mentoring from Michael Bohl. Michael is the head coach at St Peter’s Western Swim Club in Brisbane and is also an Australian and Olympic coach having seven of his swimmers make the team for the 2016 Rio Olympics. I was also lucky enough to attend sessions run by Dean Boxall who is one of the best age group coaches in Australia.

It was amazing to see Olympians train in what seemed to appear in an effortless fashion. The power and distance per stroke they were able to achieve was amazing to watch. During their 50m time trials waves of water would come across the pool grates and soak the surrounding area. Talent and ability aside their discipline with skills and tough as nails training ethic was impressive to watch. It was clear that it was this mental toughness that made them stand out from the rest – you can have all the talent in the world but you need a hunger to achieve greatness. One of the memorable quotes Bohly made to his squad while I was up there came from an ex USA basketball coach. The quote was “don’t mistake activity for achievement,” which basically means don’t expect to achieve great results unless you’re willing to put in the hard work each session – floating up and down the pool won’t cut it.

Reflecting on our program compared to what the best squad in Australia are doing it was great to see similarities in sets along with seasonal plans. Bohly was kind enough to provide me with sets upon sets and implant knowledge that is invaluable which has definitely made me more experienced/well rounded, has given me a hunger to get the most out of our athletes and given me a desire to build our program and club.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank NUsport management, Beth and Paul for their ongoing support in my development as an age group coach. It is great working for an organistation that wants to help you get the most out of your passions.

Chris
